We hear it all the time; if you want to be successful, you need to have a morning routine.

What’s your morning routine like? Do you leap out of bed and go for a 3-mile run before the world wakes up, or do you hit the snooze button 5 times before groggily rolling out of bed and desperately lurching towards the coffee machine?

I’ve been both of those people before. Not just in years of the past, but just this past week. There’s no shame in struggling some mornings. We can’t all be chipper morning people.

But if you want to incorporate some light movement into your morning routine without forcing yourself into your sneakers first thing, here’s what I do.

3 minutes of yoga.

Don’t worry. You don’t have to be super bendy or have perfect balance. The yoga I do each morning is beginner-friendly. It’s a lot like stretching, just with some flow. The best part is, this routine takes 5 minutes or less; it can be modified to fit your body, flexibility, and strength; and it requires no equipment (though a yoga mat helps). Don’t worry if you don’t have a yoga mat. You can still do this routine on the floor.

A Sun Salutation is a series of yoga poses, generally performed in the morning or at the start of a yoga practice. To me, it’s a great way to awaken my body, breath, and mind. My practice incorporates full-body movement and allows me to check-in with myself first thing each day. I find that it invigorates me and gives me the energy I need to start my day happier.

Most days, doing 3 Sun Salutations and having a cold glass of water first thing when I get up, I can get away without needing coffee.

If you’ve been to a yoga class before, you’ll likely recognize this flow. If you haven’t, that’s great too; I’ll walk you through exactly how it works.

Disclaimer: Although I have been doing yoga for over a decade, I am not a certified yoga instructor. I’m just a normal person sharing my love of yoga with you. A major part of yoga is listening to your body and doing what’s right for you personally. Any physical activity you try from reading my blog is at your own risk. You can read my full disclaimers here.

Let’s do it.

What did you think? If this something you’ll add to your morning routine? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
