5 (Not So) Hidden Lessons in Frozen 2 for Adults

1. Listen to the voice in your heart.

If there is something on your heart that you feel is calling you, don’t be afraid to chase it. It may take you on a wild adventure, but in the end, you’ll be grateful you took that journey. Most people regret the things they did not do rather than the things they did. I love the quote from Mark Twain that says, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Don’t be afraid to follow your heart and dreams into the unknown because what you have to lose by not going is greater than what you have to lose by going.

2. Everything will make sense when you’re older.

This one is a bit backwards, but I’ll explain. As in the original Frozen, Olaf once again serves as comic relief in the sequel. In the movie, he sings a ballad called When I Am Older where he shows his belief that when he’s older things will all make sense, and perhaps even his fears will seem childish. The comic relief here is in the irony. If you’ve reached adulthood, you realize that even as you age, there are always things that won’t make sense, things to learn, and fears to face. I don’t think there is any age where this changes and everything makes sense.

3. Challenge your fears, and when they knock you down, face them again.

There is a scene in the new movie where Elsa faces massive waves and stormy seas on her journey. Even with her exceptional, larger than life, bravery and magical powers, you can see her hesitate. Once she puts mind over matter and heads into the angry seas, she’s thrown back onto the beach. Again she faces her fears and is tossed and tumbled, but she continues to face her fears and refuses to give up. If you can continuously control your fears, you can eventually conquer them.

4. Just take the next right step.

When you don’t know where to go or what your end game is yet, all you need to do is take the next right step. In the movie, Anna (Kristen Bell) sings The Next Right Thing, a song about being unsure how to go on, but simply continuing to take one step at a time. When you have a big goal and you aren’t sure how to get there, think about the one small step you can do next. Any step is movement, and any movement will help you see if you’re going towards your goal or away from it. Once you have momentum, you will continue to build and grow. When life gets overwhelming, just do the next right thing.

5. There can be two queens.

Ladies, this one’s for us. I’ve seen so many examples of ladies bringing each other down in competition instead of lifting each other up. I think there’s a lesson to be learned in Elsa and Anna’s sister relationship. Both characters are strong, brave, and bold in their own ways. Instead of overshadowing each other, or feeling like less when the other is winning, they lift each other up. They are supportive and proud of each other. It’s not about who is on top because they work as a team. And SPOILER ALERT…

The movie ends with two queens.
