One good thing about Hurricane season in the Gulf Coast is that evacuation orders can give you a good excuse to visit friends and family.
As Hurricane Sally barreled towards us this past week, I took a 2-day evac and stayed with one of my best friends who lives in Port Arthur, Texas.
While not the most exciting place to live or visit, I found that Port Arthur had some hidden gems. I went to (almost) all the places my friend recommended we check out, and today I wanted to write about them for anyone who finds themselves in the town, scrolling Pinterest to find out what there is to do there.
To be clear, I don’t recommend traveling there unless you have to for work or need a place to stay overnight on your drive, but if you do find yourself there, here are 4 food recommendations to get you started.
Breakfast
Rao’s Bakery – This adorable cake and coffee shop gives you a taste of Italy. Established in 1941 in Beaumont, TX, the cafe’s food has stood the test of time. Rao’s menu includes specialty coffee, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, gelato, pastries, gorgeous cakes, and more. If you’re a macchiato lover like me, try their Carmella.
Kimmy’s Cafe – I didn’t get a chance to try this one myself, but I hear it’s THE place to get breakfast in Port Arthur. Kimmy’s menu offers crepes, breakfast burritos, sandwiches, omelets, and other hearty breakfast meals. Sounds delicious!
Lunch and Dinner
Dylan’s Bar and Grill – Dylan’s is an indoor/outdoor restaurant with American/Southern food. The outdoor area has swings for adults (so fun!), and the food was fantastic. I really enjoyed the stuffed burger I ordered, one of their specialties.
I Heart Mac and Cheese – I saw a flyer for this place on my friend’s fridge and insisted that we go there. I found out later that it’s a chain, but I’d still never seen one before. If you love Mac and cheese as much as I do, it’s a must-try. Their menu is simple, but you can also build your own bowl, and there are options for non-mac-and-cheese-lovers too.
