5 Hidden Gems in (and around) Wichita, KS

Spread the love

I had so much fun this past week with family in Wichita, KS. Every time I visit, I’m shocked at how much there is to do there. Probably just because I cram everything into a few days, but still, you’d be surprised how much the suburb has to offer. Here are 5 hidden gems to check out if you ever find yourself in Wichita.

1. Tanganyika Wildlife Park

This small zoo prides itself on the interactive experiences it offers. With a day pass, you can feed giraffes, tortoises, kangaroos, lorikeets, lemurs, and more—and they’ll let you pet some of the animals too. We chose the unlimited feedings package and went back to our favorite animals again and again. It’s such a fun day for animal lovers of all ages.

2. Chicken N Pickle

I always thought pickle ball was just a middle school gym class sport until I was introduced to Chicken N Pickle. This indoor/outdoor entertainment complex and restaurant/bar includes both indoor and outdoor pickle ball courts and lawn games including corn hole, bocce ball, and hula hoops. You can also find it in Kansas City, MO, San Antonio, TX, Oklahoma City, OK, Overland Park, KS, and Grand Prairie, TX.

3. Grinter Sunflower Farm

A tourist attraction in Lawrence, KS, the Grinter family harvests acres of Kansas’s state flower each year. You’ll have to time it right if you’re looking to catch the fields in full bloom, but around Labor Day each year is the time to go. The Grinter Sunflower Farm is about 3 hours Northeast of Wichita, but worth the day trip.

4. Keeper of the Plains

I didn’t make it there this time, but another of my favorite attractions in Wichita, KS is the Keeper of the Plains. This 44 ft sculpture honors the Native American people and is said to watch over the city of Wichita today. Check visitwichita.com to see the times when the ring of fire will burn, normally for just 15 minutes each night. Also, don’t miss the troll in it’s cell nearby!

5. The People

The best part of Wichita, KS is the people. My family in Wichita includes a good group of neighbors. Our family friends in Wichita are some of the kindest and most caring people I’ve ever met. Even though I’ve known them only a few years and seen them only a handful of times, it’s like I’ve known them my entire life.
