Brunch. It’s by far the best meal. It’s a time when people come together over delicious food and anything goes! You can get a Latte, juice, hot chocolate, a Bloody Mary, or a mimosa. You can get eggs and bacon, pancakes, a chicken sandwich, or a wrap. You can sleep in super late, and you get an excuse to dress up early in the day. It’s literally the best of all worlds.
I can’t believe I post here (almost) every Sunday and haven’t yet dedicated a post to brunch! So here it is: my 5 favorite brunches in New Orleans. Of course there are many many more that I haven’t even tried yet, but this is my list so far.
1. Another Broken Egg Café
Website: https://anotherbrokenegg.com
I have to be honest. When I went to find the link for this one, I was a bit (selfishly) disappointed to find out it was a franchise. Not that franchises are a bad thing—they’re actually a great way to share the love of good food and things to other places! I just thought I’d discovered a rare gem because I’d never seen Another Broken Egg until I moved to New Orleans.
As history has it, in 1996, the original Broken Egg Café opened in Old Mandeville, LA. Two years later “Another Broken Egg Café” opened in Destin, FL. From 2008 to today, the franchise has grown from 10 restaurants to somewhere around 100 locations in 2021. (All info from: https://anotherbrokenegg.com/about)
Still, it is my favorite brunch place I’ve tried, not just in New Orleans, but of all time. I am a sweets for breakfast kind of person, and their seasonal French Toast is always mouth-watering.
The good news is, you may not have to travel to New Orleans to check this place out!
2. The Ruby Slipper Café
Website: https://www.therubyslippercafe.net
The Ruby Slipper Café opened in 2008 as the New Orleans community was recovering from Hurricane Katrina, a devastating Category 5 Hurricane that demolished parts of New Orleans in 2005. Now, in 2021, the restaurant has grown to 11 locations across the Gulf Coast from Baton Rouge to Pensacola. I’ve been to five of those locations so far, and they all have the same NOLA charm and mouth-watering food. It’s my favorite place to take guests who come to visit because it is a modern NOLA classic. They also serve local NOLA coffee from French Truck at all their locations; even in Pensacola!
3. Twisted Waffles
Website: https://twistedwaffles.com
So, those first two might be pretty well known… but this one is definitely a hidden gem. Outside of the French Quarter and not on Magazine Street either, Twisted Waffles is actually located in an apartment building. You don’t have to live at the apartment to access it though. If it seems like it’s in a remote location, it’s really not. Annunciation Street is only a few blocks from a really cute part of Magazine Street in the Lower Garden District which you can walk around after.
They have other options besides waffles, but obviously their specialty waffles are what they’re known for. If you’re a sweets for breakfast person like me, you’ll be in heaven at this place.
4. The Country Club
Website: https://thecountryclubneworleans.com
If you’re looking for a more fancy (or exotic) brunch, this is the one for you. You’ll have to make reservations ahead of time for The Country Club, and if you want to go to their Drag Brunch on Saturday or Sunday, reservations can fill up 6 months in advance. It’s worth it though! One of my friends from out of town discovered this place and somehow got us on the list. As if drag brunch isn’t exciting enough, they also offer bottomless mimosas for a pretty reasonable price.
The Country Club is located in the Bywater District which is also a really nice place to walk (or stumble) around after.
***Check the website for the most up to date info. Currently The Country Club isn’t having a Drag Brunch due to COVID-19 restrictions.***
5. Surrey’s Café & Juice Bar
Website: http://www.surreysnola.com
As of writing this post, Surrey’s has two locations, both on Magazine Street. They don’t take reservations, but Magazine Street is my favorite area to go for a morning stroll on the weekend, so take advantage of that if there is a wait!
Unlike some places labeled “café and juice bar,” Surrey’s has more than just small bakery bites and juice. They offer full breakfast and lunch menus too! This is their Bananas Foster French Toast, and I have to say, I think it is my favorite French Toast in New Orleans! (And you know I’ve tried them all.)
Honorable Mentions & Other Recommendations
Toast
Another place to get some good French Toast!
DeVille Coffee House & Crêperie
If you’re more of a crepe person., DeVille is a great place to sit down and enjoy a crepe and coffee.
Holy Crêpes!
This is a great place if you’re looking to brunch on the go or if you need a hearty snack for a long day in the French Quarter. They have crepes to satisfy both sweet and savory cravings. The Holy Crepes Stand can be found in the French Market most days, but they do travel sometimes. Check out their Instagram page before you go. Sorry I don’t have any pictures, but you can find some on their Instagram account linked above.
District Donuts
Another Magazine Street fave, District Donuts also offers more than just donuts. They also have kolaches, biscuits, sandwiches, and sliders.
Mojo Coffee House
I had to give my favorite coffee house an honorable mention. They also offer lunch sandwiches in addition to their bakery items.
Café du Monde
Not really brunch, but let’s call it a brunch-y snack. Café du Monde is a must-visit in New Orleans. Insider tips: 1) Visit the City Park location. The line is 90% shorter there than their other locations, and it’s a beautiful setting. 2) If you absolutely must go to the famous one in the French Quarter (across from Jackson Square), go to the line in the back and take your beignets to-go. That line is usually about 50% shorter than the line out front, and the only difference is you don’t get seated on their patio; there’s plenty of benches right around it though.
Places on my List
I’ve heard Brunch at Brennan’s is fantastic. I’d also assume that Brunch at The Court of Two Sisters is amazing, though their menu looks a bit savory for my liking. As you can see from the pictures in this post, I’m definitely a French Toast and sugar kind of brunch-er.
Really, you can’t go wrong with brunch in New Orleans. To be any restaurant in NOLA is to be exceptional enough to survive the competitive food market in the city.
I hope you love this post as much as I did writing it. Let me know what your favorite brunch places are in the comments!
